Donuts or doughnuts? Either way they are delicious! Learn how to make delicious doughnuts for Chanukah with Nechama Heller and then learn an easy hack to decorate them with Rabbi Menachem Lehrfield. Click here to skip to the decorating part.
You will need:
Ingredients:
1 kilogram mix of bread flour and all purpose flour (3.5 cups of each)
2 tablespoons dry yeast
1⁄2 cup sugar
4 tsp vanilla sugar
1/4 tsp tsp fine ground pink
4 eggs
2 tablespoons vanilla extract or brandy
1/4 cup canola oil
1 1⁄2 cups water
More oil (2 quarts) for frying
Confectionery sugar
Jam or other filling (Nutella, caramel, chocolate cream, etc)
Materials/Supplies:
5 qt heavy pot
Slotted spoon
Parchment paper cut in 4x4 squares
Food safe gloves
Frying thermometer
Spray oil (pam)
Plastic wrap
Clean cookie sheet or tray lined with paper towels
Cupcake cream injector, large medicine syringe or piping bag with long metal tip
Instructions:
Mix the yeast with warm water and sugar. Set aside to proof.
Mix all liquid ingredients until combined in standing mixer. Add proofed yeast (once bubbles form).Add most of the flour
Mix then add salt.
Mix until combined and not very wet looking adding more flour til it starts to form a dough
Then shut off mixer let dough rest 2 minutes.
Mix for 6 minutes.
Place dough in well-oiled bowl and cover with towel to rest 10-20 minutes.
Make balls about 60gram each (slightly larger than a golf ball) and let rise on parchment squares (4x4). Spray with cooking spray and cover with plastic wrap about an hour to hour and half.
Then fry with oil at 360-375 on the parchment paper squares pulling them out with tongs right away about 1.5 mins per side.
Let cool before filling. To make traditional donuts, let the dough rise first 20-30 minutes then put in the fridge to get cold. Once its cold, roll out the dough about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and cut with 3” cutters. Then let rise.

Try this easy hack to decorate donuts in no time:
You will need:
Microwavable cup or bowl
Fork
Wire cooling rack (optional)
Foil or parchment paper (optional)
Other toppings like nuts, cereal, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, etc.
Microwave frosting in microwavable bowl. 30 seconds for thick frosting, 1 minute for thinner icing. Dip doughnuts in frosting and place on wire rack. Apply sprinkles and/or topping right away. Let dry and enjoy!
